How much a concrete driveway costs in Los Angeles
Real numbers for a Los Angeles driveway, and the four things that move them.

A driveway is the largest slab most houses will ever get, and it is the only concrete on the property with a vehicle parked on it. That is why it prices higher than a patio of the same size, and why the cheapest bid in the pile is almost always cheap for a reason you can name once you know where to look.
What a Los Angeles driveway costs, by size
Three sizes cover most of what gets poured here. A single-car driveway is roughly 10 by 20 feet. A standard two-car is about 16 by 25. A long two-car, or a two-car plus the apron out to the street, lands between 600 and 900 square feet.

Say the baseline out loud, because it matters: those rows assume a broom finish, four inches of concrete, easy truck access, and bare ground rather than an old slab that has to come out first. Four things move the number from there, and the estimate asks you about all four.
What the number already covers
A driveway price is not a price for concrete. Material is the minority of it. The work is everything on either side of the pour.
- Demolition of the existing slab, loaded out and hauled to a dump that weighs it on the way in. Priced as its own factor, because it only applies when there is something there.
- Excavation to depth and a compacted base, usually crushed aggregate, so the slab bears on something that will not settle underneath it.
- Forms set to the finished grade, with the fall already built into them.
- Steel: welded wire mesh on chairs, or rebar tied on a grid, lifted so it sits inside the slab instead of on the dirt.
- The pour, screeded, floated and finished inside the window the mix gives you, which in an LA summer is short.
- Control joints cut or tooled to depth, spaced so the concrete cracks where you decided rather than where it feels like it.
- Curing, then stripping forms, backfilling the edges and hauling off the spoil.
The four things that actually move the price
1. Thickness and steel
A patio holds people. A driveway holds two tons of vehicle that stops in the same spot every day, with the load concentrated into four small patches. Four inches is the patio standard and the floor for a passenger car. Five is the sensible default under a daily driver. Six is what you want where a work truck, a trailer or an RV parks. In the engine, five inches prices 15% above four, and six prices 30% above.
Steel does not stop concrete from cracking. Concrete shrinks as it cures and it will crack. Steel holds the two sides of that crack together and in the same plane, so you get a hairline you have to look for instead of a lip you catch a toe on. Mesh does that job when it is supported on chairs. Mesh laid on the dirt and hooked up with a rake mid-pour ends up at the bottom of the slab doing nothing, and it is one of the places a low bid finds its money.
2. Whether there is a slab to take out first
Removal prices 30% above a pour onto bare ground, and the reason is weight. A 400 square foot driveway at four inches is close to ten tons of debris. That is a breaker, a crew loading it, a truck, and a dump that charges by the ton on the way in.
Two surprises are common in older Los Angeles neighborhoods: asphalt laid over the original concrete, so there are two layers to take out, and a slab poured thicker than anyone expected back when a yard of concrete was cheap. Both get found on day one, not in the estimate.
3. Whether the truck can reach the pour
A ready-mix truck discharges down a chute, and the chute reaches about fifteen feet past the back of the truck. That is the whole question. If the truck can back up to the forms, the pour is fast and the slab goes in as one continuous piece. If it cannot, the concrete arrives by wheelbarrow or by pump, and tight access prices 20% above easy in the engine.
This is a real constraint in the hills and on the older narrow streets: a driveway behind a gate, a grade the truck cannot sit on, a street too tight to stage a mixer, a pour that has to happen between parked cars. The mix is also on a clock. A pour that goes slowly is not just slower, it is a different job.
4. Finish
Broom is the baseline and it is not a compromise. It is a textured surface that gives tires and shoes grip on a wet slope, which matters more on a driveway than anywhere else on the property. From there the engine prices color at 25% above broom, exposed aggregate at 40%, and stamped at 60%.
Stamped costs more because it is a second trade performed inside the finishing window: release agent, mats walked across the whole slab by hand, detailing the seams, then sealer. It needs resealing every few years to hold the color, and a stamped surface is slicker wet than a broom finish. On a sloped Los Angeles driveway that is a decision, not a detail.
They multiply, they do not add
Each factor is a multiplier on the whole job, so they compound. A stamped, five-inch driveway replacing an old slab is not 60 plus 30 plus 15 percent over the baseline. It is roughly two and a half times it. The estimate lists every multiplier that fired, with the reason it fired, under “Why this price?”, so nothing in your number is unexplained.
Permits, the sidewalk and the apron
A driveway crosses two jurisdictions, and they are permitted separately.
- The private side, from the garage to the property line. A flat replacement slab poured in the same footprint at the same grade often needs no building permit, but that is a city-by-city answer and it changes the moment you move earth, alter drainage, or work on a hillside lot.
- The public right-of-way: the apron, or driveway approach, between the property line and the street, plus any sidewalk and curb the driveway crosses. That is city property and it nearly always carries its own permit, issued by public works or engineering rather than by building and safety. In the City of Los Angeles that means the Bureau of Engineering, not LADBS.
Right-of-way work is built to the city's standard plan, not to preference. The sidewalk section crossing your driveway is a pedestrian path, so its cross slope is capped at around two percent no matter how steep the driveway behind it is. That is why the apron sometimes has to absorb a grade change your driveway does not.
Most cities also require the company doing right-of-way work to be registered and bonded with them before the permit issues, which is one more reason to know whose licence is actually on the job.
Permit fees are set by the city, not by the pricing engine, so they sit outside the band above. Run an estimate on your own address and the result lists the permits and local rules the job is likely to touch.
Drainage and slope
Rain here does not arrive gently. It arrives all at once, a few times a year, and a driveway is a wide impermeable sheet aimed at your house. Where that water goes is decided by the forms, before a single yard of concrete is ordered.
- Fall away from the structure, always. A quarter inch per foot, about two percent, is the target for a driveway. An eighth of an inch per foot is the bare minimum and leaves no room for a finish that came out a little proud.
- Nothing should pond against the garage slab or the door threshold. Where the geometry forces water toward the garage, the answer is a channel drain across the opening tied to somewhere that will actually take it, not a slightly steeper guess.
- The water needs a destination: a yard, a swale, a drain, the flow line at the curb. Solving your own drainage by pushing it onto a neighbor is a dispute, and in some cities it is a code problem too.
- The garage threshold fixes one end of the elevation and the city's flow line at the curb fixes the other. A driveway is a surface stretched between two heights you do not control, which is why a steep lot has fewer options than it appears to.
How long it takes, and when you can park on it
A straightforward two-car driveway is three or four working days on site, spread across a week or two of calendar depending on permits and inspections.
- Demolition and haul-off, if there is an old slab. Usually a full day by itself.
- Excavate to depth, then grade and compact the base. This is the step that decides whether the driveway is still flat in ten years.
- Set forms, place and tie the steel, and hold for inspection if the job is permitted.
- Pour, screed, float, finish. One day, and the finishing window is dictated by the weather rather than the schedule.
- Cut or tool the control joints, generally within six to twenty-four hours of the pour: early enough to relieve the shrinkage, late enough not to ravel the edge.
- Strip forms, backfill the edges, clean up.
Then it cures, and cure time is not padding. Concrete gains strength over weeks, reaching roughly seventy percent of its design strength at seven days and its full rating at twenty-eight.
- Walk on it: 24 to 48 hours.
- Park a passenger car on it: 7 days.
- Work truck, RV, trailer, dumpster or moving van: 28 days.
- Seal a colored or stamped surface: after the 28-day cure, not before.
In a Los Angeles summer, and especially in a dry Santa Ana wind, the surface can lose water faster than the slab can bleed it, and you get plastic shrinkage cracking on day one. That is what curing compound, a wet cure and an early-morning pour are for. A crew that pours a large slab at midday in September and drives away is telling you something.
Fine cracking along the control joints is not a defect. Joints are cut to about a quarter of the slab depth precisely so the concrete cracks on a line you chose. A driveway with no joints is not a stronger driveway. It is one that will pick its own.
Reading a quote far below the band
A cheaper bid is not automatically a worse one. But the gap has to come from somewhere, and on flatwork there are only a handful of places it can come from. Ask these, and get the answers in writing.
- How many inches thick, and what steel: mesh or rebar, at what spacing, held up on chairs?
- How deep is the base, what material, and is it compacted or just raked flat?
- Is demolition and dump fee included, or is the old slab someone else's problem?
- Who pulls the right-of-way permit for the apron and sidewalk, and is that fee inside this number?
- Where do the control joints go, and how deep are they cut?
- What is the fall, in inches per foot, and where does the water end up?
- What deposit is being asked for, and whose licence is on the contract?
That last one has a legal answer. California caps a home-improvement deposit at $1,000 or 10% of the contract, whichever is less. A request for a third or a half up front is not a negotiating position. It tells you what kind of company you are dealing with.

- How long before I can park on a new concrete driveway?
- Walk on it after 24 to 48 hours. A passenger car can go on it at 7 days, by which point the slab is at roughly seventy percent of its design strength. Wait the full 28 days before a work truck, an RV, a trailer or a loaded moving van. Driving on green concrete rarely cracks it on the spot; it shortens the slab's life and leaves marks that do not come out.
- Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Los Angeles?
- There are two answers, because a driveway sits on two properties.
